Logging the Stillwater , by Robert A. M. Stephens. This little locomotive is a 6 ton 0-4-0T locomotive built by Porter. (T=tank), meaning it carries its water for the boiler and for steam over the boiler for weight, is working out in front of our ranch around the turn of the last century. It is small but at the time of this image portrayl it was the most advanced technological breakthrough of its time, replacing a team of 30 oxen, for the work it could do in the same time frame. And it could do it with only one man running her, and a crew of two to load the disconnected log trucks back at the landing where the logs were decked. The scene is about 6 miles from Stillwater Montana. In the collection of Benchmark Publications. Oil on panel. 24" x 36" |
