Logging With Geared Steam , by Robert A. M. Stephens.
This is a wood burning Shay locomotive, a geared, slow, and very powerful flexible logging locomotive that was built and used specifically for the rigors of the woods. Steep ground, rough and uneven trackage, and amazingly sharp curves were the stalwarks for these machines and for some 90 years they literally opened up the west. This locomotive is working somewhere in Montana in the early part of the last century. In the collection of Benchmark Publications. Oil on panel. 24" x 33" |
