A Shay Logging Locomotive, Front view, by Robert A. M. Stephens, Collection of Finescale Railroader Magazine, Finescale Railroader Photo. Taking a break from painted images here is a photo taken by Russ Reinberg, owner-editor of Finescale Railroader Magazine of one of my finescale models I build in brass and wood of a narrow gauge, geared, logging locomotive, and this is the front view. All other models in the background are also built by Russ Reinberg. The model is 3/8=1" scale, which for a locomotive this size, results is a final model that isn't very large--about 6 inches long. Shays were a geared engine, as mentioned, verses a locomotive with side rods and direct connected. Shays and other geared engines like them were slow in speed, very great on actual power. A rear view of this locomotive is Image 55 which is here. The locomotives is working, in that all parts and working motion is functional as the prototype. it is powered by a small micro motor housed in the tender and completely hidden from view. The model is comprised of some 1400 parts total with every nut and bolt of the real thing, inherent on the model, thus the salutation of 'Finescale. To get the realistic coloring effect, real rust powder, dirt, and oil and water based modeling paints are used. The firewood in the tender is real wood and is western red spruce, split and glued in place.
