ID4 Destroyer, Urban Modifications, , by Robert A. M. Stephens. Collection of Twentieth Century Fox
In early 1987 when ID4 was to be released on video I was contacted along with many other artists from various guilds to submit pieces of art work both digital and medium of choice off line of various sequences from the movie--real or imagined. I chose the scene above along with other scenes that are archived in my image section. This one above depicts the Destroyer class ship as it has stopped over New York and is going to work on the city proper. Since there was no long view from anywhere, including the movie, of the ship using its primary weapons system I chose that scenario for this work. Twentieth Century Fox later sent everyone templates for the ships and other accruements of the movie to allow making scenes easier including the ship itself. But, by the time we got the templates alot of us had already done the piece we had chosen. With that said, that ship above was hard to do from scratch. I did the wireframe in VectorWorks 8.5, Apple's ClarisDraw-CAD 1.0.4 for filling and trace coloring--all gray tones, and then exported it into RenderMan for the explosions and fire and smoke and then Canoma for final rendering. I used QuickTime to compress it for internet display. |
